Science Media Centre Startup Symposium

“Working towards a better relationship between science & technology and the media”

Talks from science media centre leaders from the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan, followed by a panel discussion

The question that needs addressing is whether scientific researchers are getting their views and opinions heard in a society where its people are noticing and growing anxious about their dependence on science and technology. Did the mainstream media do enough to provide people with the information they needed when swine flu or foot-and-mouth disease broke out. The Science Media Centre (SMC) wants to help the media to get the facts their readers want. Science media centres are already fully operational in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

In Japan, the Science Media Centre began as a research project at Waseda University, funded by the Research Institute of Science and Technology for Society (RISTEX), and has now become a registered association.

During this symposium, leaders from science media centres in the United Kingdom and Australia, and a science communicating expert from the United States will report about what the situation is like between scientists and the media in their own country, followed by a panel discussion where audience members can take part in debating ways in how science communication could be improved.

We welcome anyone with an interest in science communication, science & technology research, mainstream media, or science & technology in the media to take part in this event.
